    I've been reading Data Analysis Using Regression and Multilevel/Hierarchical Models by Gelman and Hill. I'm getting acquainted with my new cartoon character friends Elmer (lmer) and Bugs, and at some point it may become clear what is going on. At the moment though, the whole thing seems a bit Looney Tunes.
