Convinced that Spain would win over Russia, Vladimir Putin decided to watch the match on TV, and send Dmitri Medvedev to the stadium in his stead. As in other occasions, Medvedev, not Putin was to be associated with failure.

Unexpectedly, Russia won over Spain.
