R is a strange, deeply flawed language that nevertheless has an enthusiastic and rapidly growing user base. What about R accounts for its popularity in its niche? What can language designers learn from R's success?

The problem here is that the $ notation is a magical shortcut and like any other magic if used incorrectly is likely to do the programmatic equivalent of turning yourself into a toad.

On a related note, I finally got some time to work again on my #rstats package for content analysis of online sources such as websites. Automatic update of websites kind of working, and today I go a shiny app for qualitative analysis working to a decent standards (load datasets, tagging, filters, automatic save, etc.) - https://github.com/giocomai/castarter https://social.giorgiocomai.eu/attachment/31098 -

Whoops! I read that e+24 as e-24, so scrub all that I said.
(You'd think, that having seen Bill Venables make a similar error -- which he corrected in the follow-up posting to which I was replying -- I would've been more careful. Well, you'd think wrong. Actually it *was* e-24 when I posted; then the Gremlins got in and changed everything. :-) )
