Good talk. It led me to removing some redundant links from the tab order navigation in Pinafore. Plenty of other good #a11y tips in there as well.

Interesting article on how Domino's is being sued for making their website inaccessible, and the case may go to the Supreme Court: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/25/dominos-asks-supreme-court-to-say-disability-protections-dont-apply-online.html /ht @sil #a11y

So it looks like neither Firefox nor Chromium are accessible under GNOME (silence on the screen reader). What’s worse, it doesn’t appear that Overview mode is accessible (tested on Pop!_OS). You cannot use the search on it (e.g., type software – the s disabled speech).
Does anyone know where these issues are being discussed?
Accessibility choices I made that I'm a bit unsure about:
- I used regions instead of headings because we can't know where emoji-mart is hosted on the page, so can't assume h1 vs h2 etc. I'm worried I added too many regions though.
- The skin tone picker is weird: it's a button that invokes a dropdown menu that contains itself… I did what I could using role=menulist and aria-haspopup but without changing the DOM structure. Tested in NVDA and VoiceOver and seems mostly okay. #a11y
I'm testing a new version of emoji-mart on https://dev.pinafore.social. If all goes well, we'll release it to npm and merge into Mastodon as well.
The most radical change is a ton of accessibility fixes. If any #a11y advocates would like to take a look, I'd appreciate it. 🙂 It's not perfect, but it's an improvement over the old version (which was just divs and spans). Thanks!
There were 4 accessibility issues on emoji-mart, and I fixed all 4 of them today: https://github.com/missive/emoji-mart/pulls/nolanlawson
There is still a lot of room for improvement, but at the very least this makes the search bar, the list of emoji, the skin tone picker, and the category nav menu accessible. Before, you couldn't even tab through anything with the keyboard. #a11y

I'm continually reminded that I'm only able to effectively tackle accessibility issues when I can use VoiceOver (on macOS) for testing. I've never found a better screenreader from a developer's viewpoint.
While adding links to Heartbeat design documents as historic reference to the latest #hypha spike post*, I ended up watching the Heartbeat initial reveal video again.
I’d highly recommend that anyone working on tools for social justice view it.

* Hypha is basically me still working on the same problem, four years later, with better tools.
I'm testing some new accessibility features for Pinafore, inspired by what the Mastodon frontend does. In particular, I'm putting extra information in the aria-label for each status/notification, in the hope that it will make it easier for screenreader users to skim their timeline. https://github.com/nolanlawson/pinafore/pull/690
If any users of screenreaders/ATs can test https://dev.pinafore.social to see if these changes make sense, it would be much appreciated!

So, I needed the #Telegram desktop app just to sign-up to the service. Could have been done via web, surely??
Then needed the web app just to disable image and url previews. Make your mind up!!
Right, I now finally have something I can use.. well ISH.
I still hate it. The questionable self-rolled #E2EE. The misogynistic stickers. The lack of #a11y design implementations. The default reconnection with old contacts. And more..
just to help a particpation program 🙃
@hollyamory Hey Holly, sorry I should have done a much better job with that. Here goes:

Add descriptions to ALL your images. Not only does this add info for those with limited sight, it's another layer to add fun commentary when we hover over an image.
CamelCaseYourHashtags as this makes screenreaders more accurate.

#a11y visual descriptions of GIFs don't seem to work for me in the Mastodon Web UI. Anyone who uses able to confirm?
